Marking graves

Jun 5, 2025

The project of marking abandoned graves continues at the New Jewish Cemetery in Prague.
The project aims to mark a significant number of unmarked sites from the years 1938-1945.
In the course of the project, the actual condition of the grave sites is being compared with archival materials.
The records of the Chevra Kadisha association, whose burial books are one of the most important sources of information about the buried,
along with the registers of Jewish religious communities. As a result, all grave sites will be systematically and properly marked.

Behind the unmarked grave sites there are many personal stories, often with a very sad ending.

Such is the story of Hugo Lederer, who died in May 1942 in Terezín's Small Fortress, allegedly of a heart attack.
He was then transported to Prague and buried in the New Jewish Cemetery, but without a proper grave marker.
It is likely that his surviving daughter never learned this information, as her grave, located elsewhere, bears her father's name with an in memoriam note.
