Seminar on the Protection of Jewish Cemeteries

Sep 3, 2026

We would like to invite you to a seminar dedicated to the protection of Jewish cemeteries in the Czech Republic, which will take place on 11–12 November 2026 in Brno.

The seminar is organised by ESJF in cooperation with the Dr Dagmar Lieblová Foundation, Matana, the Federation of Jewish Communities in the Czech Republic, and the Jewish Community of Brno, with financial support from the Federal Republic of Germany. It is intended for museum professionals, educators, students, and anyone interested in historical monuments, regional history, and cultural heritage who does not yet have extensive experience with Jewish heritage sites.

The two-day programme will introduce participants to the basic principles of caring for Jewish cemeteries, cemetery restoration projects in the Czech Republic, the ESJF methodology for documenting gravestones, and opportunities to get involved in the protection of Jewish heritage sites.

The programme will also include a field trip to the Jewish cemetery in Slavkov u Brna, a guided tour of the Brno synagogue, a visit to the Jewish cemetery in Brno with a workshop focused on understanding the texts on gravestones, as well as discussions and an opportunity to share experiences with experts in the field.

The seminar will be held in Czech, and participation is free of charge. Refreshments will be provided, as well as accommodation from 11 to 12 November if required. Participants are responsible only for their own travel expenses.

Places are limited, so registration is required via the registration form.

The deadline for registration is 4 October 2026.
