Completion of the Restoration of the Jewish Cemetery in Zběšičky

Feb 19, 2026

The Jewish cemetery in Zběšičky, founded in the mid-18th century, saw the completion of restoration work on its gravestones in 2025. Restoration took place in four phases—2010, 2021, 2023, and last year—thanks to the generous financial support of the Jihočeský kraj.

This support made it possible to preserve the epitaphs and relief decorations on the gravestones, many of which feature traditional Jewish symbols. The total cost of the restoration was approximately 450,000 CZK.

Jewish settlement in Zběšičky is documented from the early 18th century, though the community was never large. There was no dedicated Jewish quarter or synagogue in the village. As a result, the cemetery is the most significant Jewish heritage site in the area. It is situated on the edge of a wooded slope, surrounded by a private game preserve with grazing fallow deer.

The cemetery plot, covering 1,029 m², was purchased by local Jews in 1750. Approximately 100 gravestones from the cemetery’s founding up to 1932 have survived. At the entrance stands a mortuary, which, along with the stone boundary wall, was restored between 2003 and 2006.

The cemetery’s owner, the Jewish Community in Prague, extends its gratitude to the Jihočeský kraj for its financial support.
